Piccolo Joe's GoatsThe Milkshed | Rules the Roost

Yes, Rence is a milkmaid. Mooooo!!

The Milk Shed I really do enjoy having my own family cow. I appreciate farm-fresh milk (which is a completely different animal than what you get in the store that is processed to death). One of the benefits of having your own is that you know what she eats, and know how she's treated. You know exactly what's going on with your food when you do it yourself.

Having your own also means you know where your cream, butter, yogurt, kefir, and cheeses come from as well.
Sweetie was my first Jersey Cow, and just like her name implies, she's very sweet - and very ladylike. She loves wheat bread, bananas, apples and carrots, and usually very gingerly takes what's offered.  She's gentle enough for visitors to try their hand at milking, and she's very patient.

I had Sweetie for two years. When she first came to me, she was giving me 2-1/2 gallons of milk a day. But when the spring grass come in, she would give me at least 3-1/2 gallons (sometimes over four gallons) a day.
..

Unfortunately, I was never able to breed Sweetie back after repeated AI and live coverage attempts, so I had to sell her, and I miss her very much. I can't bring myself to take down her pictures yet. I hope she was able to breed back for her new owners....

Honey BeeAnd because I find Jerseys irresistable...and because they should have a companion...

Bee is my second Jersey Cow. She comes from Aspen Grove Jersey's in Morristown, TN.
She came to me
heavily bred, and had a bull calf.

At the time of this update, she's been here a year....and she's due to calve on June 15, 2010.

So I'm trying to dry her off....again, with the spring grass coming in. Good luck to me.....

And because she came along at the right time, and looked so cute....

Our youngest resident (until Bee calves) is Bella.   Bella is a Holstein/Angus mix who is well on her way to being a future family cow and is being lead trained. Her bestest friend is my newest nubian herdsire, Don Gianni. I don't know how I'm going to separate them this summer during breeding season. I might have to move her to the doe field along with him!

Bee and Bella 12-19-09 Ok, So bella is a bit bigger now, but her baby picture was too cute to take down. Bee and Bella used to hate each other, and Bee used to beat up Bella all the time.

But now they're pretty good friends now ^.^ See how much they love each other.

I suppose I should be working on an image gallery for more sweet pictures of them standing there looking at me while soaking wet from the rain!
